What is Atheism?

My sermon title is really a call for us to think about various ways of imagining “God.” Atheism is usually equated with the rejection of an intentional Supernatural Supreme Being who can directly intervene in our lives. This is the God Richard Dawkins debunks in his book The God Delusion. But that’s not the only “God possibility” as I see it. Dawkins does not go far enough when it comes to theological explorations. Ironically, I get some guidance in my own theological journey-making from my “favorite atheist,” as it were-the French philosopher, novelist, and essayist, Albert Camus. His words, In the midst of winter I discovered that there was within me an invincible spring have become increasingly important to me. More on all this when I join you on Sunday.
