Though one of our nation’s founding principles is the separation of church and state, I was struck recently by the religious language used in local 250th commemorations and the 25th anniversary of 9/11.  This service will explore whether and how publicly invoking elements of spirituality — what some scholars call America’s “civil religion” — can be used to unite rather than divide us as a religiously pluralistic nation.
