Christ Climbed Down

The sermon title is also the title of a poem by the late Lawrence Ferlinghetti. My first hearing of it was one of the early steps on my journey to religious liberalism; and I use it here as we move into this Holiday Season. At first the poem sounds like nothing more than a send-up of some of our Christmas/Holiday practices. But then there’s the last line which reads in part: “Christ climbed down from His bare Tree this year and softly stole away into some anonymous Mary’s womb again, where in the darkest night of everybody’s anonymous soul, He awaits an unimaginable Immaculate Reconception, the very craziest of second comings.” The idea that the birth of Jesus is something that takes place in “everybody’s anonymous soul” gave me a new take on the meaning of the Christmas Story. I’ll share some of these thoughts on Sunday. – Rev. Steve Edington
