The Spirituality of Woody Guthrie

This sermon draws on a book I wrote several years ago titled: “Bring Your Own God—The Spirituality of Woody Guthrie.” It puts some of the religious and spiritual currents in Woody Guthrie’s life within the framework of his overall life. His life was a paradox. He was a very talented song writer and musician, a loving and caring human being, a devoted social justice advocate; as well as being a markedly flawed human being. I call this “The Holy Paradox” and will expand on it in the sermon. Woody Guthrie’s life and work have been a strong influence on me as I’ve made my own American journey; and I look forward to sharing these thoughts with you on Sunday. – Rev. Steve Edington
