Who, and How, Do We Thank?

As Thanksgiving approaches, I’ll share some thoughts on the theme of gratitude. I build them around some words from the late Rev. Raymond Baughn, a Universalist minister: “Giving thanks has nothing to do with who or what produced the gift. Rather it is a way of perceiving life.” How do we “perceive life” with a sense of gratitude, even in those times when life wounds us? I’ll also draw on the wisdom of the 16th century mystic and Dominican Priest, Meister Eckhart, who noted: “If the only prayer you say in your life is ‘thank you’ that would suffice.” I ‘ll pull the words of these two persons together on November 13th.
