I, Rev Steve Edington, did a service a year or so ago on my overview of the life and legacy of Woody Guthrie. This Sunday I’ll narrow the focus to Woody’s take on the person of the Jesus as portrayed in the New Testament Gospels. For Woody, Jesus was one who stood up for the workers, laborers, and “regular people” of his day—giving them hope and dignity. This Jesus of Woody’s stands in direct contrast to the “Conquering Jesus” of the Christian Nationalists. And I find it of interest that these two Jesuses, if you will, are being played out in some of the US Senate races this year—especially the ones in Texas and Kansas. More on this on October 18.
